Ceratosaurus

Ceratosaurus is a medium-sized terrestrial carnivore. Maneuverable, durable, and able to perform a high-damage bite, it is a straightforward and effective hunter.

Appearance

Ceratosaurus has a row of scutes on its back, giving it a rough and scaly appearance. This dinosaur also has a pair of horns above its brows and a horn on its nose, perhaps brightly colored for display. It has a long, wiry tail that it uses for balancing.

Paleo Info

Ceratosaurus was a carnivorous theropod dinosaur in the Late Jurassic period (Kimmeridgian to Tithonian). This genus was first described in 1884 by American paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh based on a nearly complete skeleton discovered in Garden Park, Colorado, in rocks belonging to the Morrison Formation. The type species is Ceratosaurus nasicornis. Ceratosaurus belongs to the family Ceratosauridae which belongs to the much larger group Ceratosauria which also includes Abelisaurs and Noasaurs. Ceratosaurus was about 5.3 m (17 ft) to 5.69 m (18.7 ft) long and weighing around 418 kg (922 lb) to 670 kg (1,480 lb), though larger specimen suggest larger estimates of 6 m (20 ft) to 7 m (23 ft) long weighing about 452 kg (996 lb) to 980 kg (2,160 lb).
